Essay: How much homework is too much?

How much homework is too much? The minute students get home from school they will usually sit at the table and start their homework. It seems that the amount of homework is impossible to finish in one night, but the student doesn’t have a choice but to complete it. By completing the homework the student has a limited amount of sleep causing the lack of focus throughout the day. Teachers should limit the amount of homework they give out to the students because not only does it cause stress, but it can also cause other health issues.
Students tend to feel overwhelmed to the point where they are discouraged to even do their homework. Whether it’s that a student is taking a too advanced class just so that they will meet the college standards or even if they are just trying to ace the big exam that will either make or break their grade. The feeling of stress and frustration can lead to failure. Students may also feel that the material in the class is just too difficult for them, so they just don’t even try to succeed causing frustration. Education shouldn’t be promoting frustration, but instead should have learning and understanding as it’s main objective. Homework can be very frustrating when you are trying to figure out a certain math problem and have absolutely no idea how to do it, and then your parents don’t know how to do it anymore than you do. Plus, you still have an economic project that you completely forgot about that’s due tomorrow, and it just seems that the homework just keeps piling up, and then you realize that it’s already 10:30 p.m. Like most responsible high students you struggle to stay awake and finish your homework, and then finally you go to sleep at 12 a.m. and the wake up at 6:30 a.m. only getting about six and half hours of sleep.
Students that spend hours doing homework every night, do not automatically see an increase their test grades, but a possible decrease in them. It has been proven that students who try to cram late night studying will result into worse grades than students who get a good night’s sleep the night before the test. Researchers at The Bradley Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island showed that teenagers need about nine to ten hours of sleep each night so that they will be fully alert throughout the entire day. With the majority of students living with sleep deprivation adults tend to ignore the profound effect homework has on teenager’s mental and behavioral health. The doctor’s of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend to all high schools to not open their doors until 8:30 in the morning for the safety of the student’s health.
Research has shown that for most student’s it might not be the actual homework that’s the problem, but instead it could be distractions. In today’s world kids are always getting distracted by something like texting or even social media, and for the parents, it’s always a constant battle for them it get their kids to do their homework. Because they rather be doing something else, but you can’t them, who would want to do homework? The kids that do their homework without fighting with their parents would understand that the homework is very important because it teaches them where their strengths and weaknesses are. Even though you might not agree, everyone should know that homework will help the students in the long run and will teach them a sense responsibility. Yes, I do agree that students get distracted by technology, and forget about their homework until like 9 o’clock at night, but the amount of homework is still outrageous because when the students finally finish their homework it’s already 12:30 a.m. Even I don’t agree with the amount of homework teachers hand out to students I do agree that the students who do their homework gain a sense of responsibility.
