Incorporating Danaher Community Reach Program to Break the Self-Perpetuating

Poverty Cycle in DC

It is important to meet and offer solutions to the growing needs and social problems of Washington DC’s low-income residents. A community reach program initiated by Danaher Corporation could benefit these most vulnerable residents and eventually break the self-perpetuating poverty cycle. This memo explains why Danaher Corporation should align itself with this issue, documents how such a program could be implemented, and addresses the potential concerns in implementing this program.

Poverty in DC and the Benefits of Dissipating Poverty

Washington DC has a disproportionate share of the region’s poor residents and the gap between the haves and have-nots is continuously widening. According to the DC Fiscal Policy Institute (2009), based on data from the US Census Bureau, one in five residents in DC lived in poverty between 2005 and 2007 (para 1). Statistically, this results in poorer health, poorer educational achievements, higher crime, higher unemployment, and more homeless and fuels the poverty cycle. According to data released by the Department of Employment Services (2010), the unemployment rate in DC for February 2010 was 11.9 percent while the national unemployment rate was 9.7 percent (para 1,2). Financially, this results in fewer tax payers and lesser city revenues. A large proportion of the revenue is streamed into various forms of welfare payments and only a small proportion is spent on city maintenance and modernization. By incorporating a community reach program, Danaher Corporation could gradually transform low-income residents into middle-income residents. Over-time this initiative would dissipate DC’s globally-embarrassing poverty and social problems. It would reduce the dependence on welfare, instill self-confidence, and rekindle the American dream within each, benefiting the society as a whole and raise Danaher Corporation’s reputation for social responsibility for implementing the program.

Breaking the Self-Perpetuating Poverty Cycle

The program would mainly target teens and young adults. Child poverty is very costly for the US economy. According to the Center for American Progress (2007), “Experts estimate that child poverty each year: reduces productivity and economic output by about 1.3% of GDP; raises the costs of crime by 1.3% of GDP; and raises health expenditures and reduces the value of health by 1.2% of GDP” (para 8). creating new learning centers, teaching technical skills, and providing job training. By keeping teens from dropping out of school and incentivizing young adults to complete their education through financial assistance will produce better educated people. Equipped with education these young adults will adopt a more productive mainstream lifestyle. The program would awaken young adults’ potential to succeed and provide rewarding jobs when they do. Danaher Corporation being one of the largest employers in DC, involving in this program would help and be a beacon of hope for the poverty stricken young adults.

Potential Concerns in Implementing this Program

The main concern in implementing this program is the cost. By implementing the program in a small scale by focusing on a few high schools and young adults who are eager and receptive to change their lifestyles for better the cost of the program and related benefits could be assessed and studied further. Next concern would be the acceptance of the program and the potential resistance from the teens and young adults. This could be overcome through counseling, incentives, financial aid, and scholarships. Another concern would be the feasibility of the program. According to Fred Festa, Chairman, President and CEO of WR Grace & Co., the company implements many community stewardship programs under the principal “We are committed to our communities. By investing in them, we invest in our future.” (para 3). Elevating poverty in DC immediately is impossible but taking positive steps to break the cycle-of-poverty could gradually lead to transformation. For example, if five percent of the low-income households could be transformed into middle-income households, it would proportionately increase tax revenues and decrease welfare spending. Costs of the program could also be shared by partnering with other public, private, and non-profit organizations in DC.

Implementation of a program to breaking the poverty cycle in Dc would produce productive contributing individuals, reduce dependence on welfare payments, and pave way to deal with the issues that are inflicted in the nation’s capital. It would increase Danaher Corporation’s social reputation further.
