Overpopulation By Sylvia Chidi

In the poem 'Overpopulation' Sylvia Chidi tells us what she thinks is the worlds ultimate problem is, overpopulation. Sylvia here is embracing the one child policy and believes everyone should do so too. Today the world faces hundreds of problems; climate change, pollution, starvation etc. What if the origin of most of these problems was overpopulation? What would happen to future generations if population keeps on rising. Sylvia Chidi in this poem tells us what she believes is the solution, the one child policy.
As the poem opens, Sylvia writes 'The masses engage in mass copulation/ The gases of the masses spell out pollution' here she is telling how we people- the billions of people around the world -just copulate not thinking of the damage that is unbelievably being done and how the 'masses' make out pollution. She also goes on and writes 'Men and women always want more and more/ Long is the suffering future generations must all endure' stating how people always want more than we actually need, not understanding that this world is not infinite in resources.
Maybe until it effects everyone entirely will we begin to do something about overpopulation. Sylvie goes on to conclude the poem by saying 'Let us embark on a global mission/ Embrace the one child policy as a future vision/ Let us take steps in the right directions'. Sylvie believes that the ultimate solution would be for countries to pass on the one child policy. The one child policy would affect future generations dramatically. The world could see an end; to global warming, to world hunger, to poverty. Yet people would have no uncles or aunts and even would not have an older brother or sister to look up to. Is overpopulation really the problem?

FOOD AND WATER

When we go into a grocery store looking for a certain thing but it has been sold out, we decide to go and look for it at some other store. What would happen if you go into a grocery store and not finding anything, the whole store is empty. You're then told that everything has been sold out. How would you go about things then?
Food and water is a really important factor for survival. Not enough of it to supply everyone in the world would be catastrophic. People everywhere would be fighting for survival. Studies show that countries with a stable populations have less hunger-related deaths. 'Nine billion is an exceptional amount of people, considering the world's population only reached 1 billion in 1830...' (Hoevel,Web) in less than 100 years the world's population has multiplied more than 6 times. This means that more food is needed to for more people which farmers are expected to grow. What if over time there is a population 'boom' and not enough food available.
What would happen if the demand of supply is higher than the supply available? The erosion of China's natural capital for instance, 'led to the starvation of over twenty million people'(Tal,Web). The one child policy was an aid to China's overpopulation problem.
Today droughts are a big problem in the US. This causes food shortages and food prices to go up. If overpopulation weren't an issue today droughts wouldn't be either in my opinion. The less people the less resources are needed.

ENERGY & POLLUTION
The more of us the more we need. There are factories everywhere that pollute the air everyday but we cant really blame them. Since the things that they are doing is only necessary. Like provide energy or make cars. Cars, they are everywhere. They are necessary to people to go on about their lives yet they are poison to our ecosystem. The more people there are the more cars are made. How many people do you know that want that one new car that just came out? The only problem is global warming and that there isn't an infinite amount of natural oil . Without anymore natural oil in the world cars and many other things become useless, it gone would change the way the world works. UK researchers say we have used up more than we think.
One of the worlds biggest problems is global warming. When people hear this they don't think much about it, but this is an undeniable problem which affects our ecosystem. People will not do anything until it actually becomes something that it affects their life's in. For example a major hurricane or a devastating drought caused by intense heat. Global warming has been proved to be a real issue. Many things have been done about it but with population rising I doubt it would really make a difference.
There are places in China that it is so polluted that it is necessary in order for people to breath safely. What would happen if we were to do nothing about overpopulation and pollution becomes a world wide issue. Picture yourself wearing a gas mask to go to the park. Today China is the most populated country on the planet today. Every 15 days 1 million people are added into India's population In about fifty years India will surpass China in population. With no population control that is very effective in India there could be some bad conclusions.

SPACE NECCESARY
What would happen if this planet gets overcrowded? People need space to live. Things like trash would be a huge issue. As Ann Hoevel from CNN mentioned 'When London, England, faced a population boom in the 1850's.... it's infrastructure was not prepared for the excess waste, which resulted in Cholera outbreaks.'
There is times where I take out the trash and the dumpster would not get picked up. Eventually it would get overloaded. What if they would stop getting picked up because they would have no where to take it. No more landfills because they'd already be all full. Take the Mobro 4000 in 1987 for example, when there was no more space for trash in the landfills it carried over 6 million pounds of trash for over 6 months trying to find a place to dump it. This ship full of trash caused everyone to worry about these things and raised awareness.
The movie Wall-E is an example and it shows how the world could possibly be if it's full of trash. The world would not be able to sustain life that humans would have to live on another planet or outer space. In this movie people are evacuated because of all the trash... could this happen to us humans in the near future? In my opinion so much waste would most likely be the end ' human extinction - since there would be so much disease in the atmosphere.

SOLUTIONS
Everyone in the world is mainly concerned about their own problems and don't pay attention to world problems. It is important to understand that natural resources wont last forever. When something is obvious to people its when they would start to do something about it. We need to realize how serious this problem is and how it can effect everyone and future generations. Policies like the one-child policy in China is a good way of keeping population control.
There are many methods that can be used other than the one-child policy as well. 'An effective method of controlling birthrates is making provisions in taxation that favor families with none or a limited number of children....' (Kulkami, Web) this idea is a really good one yet it has not been taken into effect in any countries. China today has policies similar to this one that favors smaller families.
Other ideas by Arjun Kulkami are education, family planning, and sex education. With more minds learning the more ideas and more awareness of the overpopulation problem. All of these ideas would 'curb' overpopulation. These things can be done before it really is too late. In my opinion overpopulation is the real world problem and awareness needs to be raised.
